About Clear Solitaire
Clear Solitaire is a free online solitaire site built around three ideas: cards you can actually read, deals you can actually win, and a page that stays out of your way.
Why we built it
Solitaire is one of the most-played games in the world and one of the worst-served online. The typical site gives you cards the size of a postage stamp with thin grey rank indices, a dark mode that darkens the card faces themselves until red and black are indistinguishable, an ad that covers part of the tableau, a video you have to watch before you can start again, and an account form you didn’t ask for.
We wanted the opposite of that, particularly for people who play a lot of solitaire and who find small type genuinely tiring.
Readable. Card size is a real setting — Standard, Large, and Large Print — not a suggestion to use browser zoom. Large is the default. Large Print enlarges the rank and suit relative to the card and opens up the stacking offset so buried cards show their full corner index. Dark mode darkens the table, never the card faces.
Winnable. With a random shuffle, a meaningful share of solitaire deals cannot be won by anyone. Winnable deals only is on by default: a solver plays each deal to completion before you ever see it. Winnable is not the same as easy — plenty of verified deals will beat you — but a loss becomes something you could have avoided rather than something decided by the shuffle. You can turn it off if you want the true odds.
Playable by anyone. The whole game works from the keyboard, every card and pile is a labelled control that screen readers announce properly, focus rings are big enough to see, and all animation switches off if your system asks for reduced motion.
Quiet. No account. No download. No pop-ups. No forced video. No interstitial between you and the deal.
How the site pays for itself
Honestly: right now, it does not. There are no ads on the site today. To keep it free for the long run we plan to add a small amount of display advertising later - and when we do, the rules below will apply from day one.
We hold ourselves to a few rules about that. Any ad will sit beside the board, never on top of the cards. Nothing will pop up, expand over the game, or play video you have to sit through to keep playing. Nothing will interrupt a game in progress. If an ad ever covers a card or blocks a move, that’s a bug — tell us and we’ll fix it.
Your settings, stats and daily streak are stored in your own browser, on your own device. There is no account, because there is nothing we need to keep.
